General Information

What:

Bar Harbor Brass Week is an intensive educational and performance experience for select college and high school brass musicians, presented by the Mark Woolman Horner Music Education Fund.

A small group of high school and college/pre-professional participants are selected to form brass choirs and chamber ensembles to prepare for performances in Bar Harbor.  Daily activities include rehearsals, coachings, masterclasses, and private lessons--all led by a prestigious faculty of many of the finest brass musicians and educators in the country.

All of this takes place on the campus of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine.  Bar Harbor is one of the East Coast's most popular summer tourist destinations and lies adjacent to Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island.

When:

The 12th Annual Bar Harbor Brass Week will take place June 24-30, 2012.  The week will start with Sunday evening registration (June 24) from 5-7pm; placement auditions from 7-9pm, and end Saturday night, with an overnight stay through Sunday morning, July 1 at 9:00AM.

Application:

All applicants must submit an application form and audition/placement recording.  The application deadline is FEBRUARY 1, 2012 for College students and MARCH 1, 2012 for High School students.

Cost, Housing and Travel:

College Students:  Those selected to participate in the COLLEGE program will receive free tuition,     room & board; however, accepted college students are required to pay a non-refundable $100 materials and administration fee upon acceptance to the program, which will secure their position in the 16-member Brass Choir. Students will be housed in dormitories at the College of the Atlantic and will receive three meals/day Monday through Friday at the dining hall.  Brass Week will provide meals Saturday morning and Saturday evening.  Check out is Sunday morning at 9:00AM.

Travel to Bar Harbor will be the responsibility of the participant.  Participants can drive or fly into Hancock County Airport (12 miles from Bar Harbor) or Bangor International Airport (50 miles.)  Some past participants have also flown into New York and Boston and taken the bus or carpooled to Bar Harbor.  Brass Week will arrange car pool pick-up and drop-off from the Bangor or Hancock County airports.

High School Students:  **Please note fee changes**  The fee for Maine commuting High School Participants is $375.  This fee covers tuition, materials and lunch at the College of the Atlantic Monday through Friday.  The fee for Maine resident, non-commuting students staying in the dorm is $700.  The fee for out-of-state High School Participants staying at the dorm is $1050.  RETURNING out-of-state high school participants will receive 10% off tuition/room/board.

High School Participants coming from out-of-town who need housing may stay with their families (some students stay with parents in local hotels/inns/campgrounds), or they may choose to stay at the College of the Atlantic dormitory.  There will be adult chaperons for high school students staying at the dorm.  Out-of-state students apply to the camp every year and most have been invited; but in order to maintain a reasonable balance of instrumentation, we do give preference to students from Maine.

If you plan to travel and stay with parents, or have housing available with local relatives, please indicate this in your application.  If you choose to stay with parents (not at the dorm), your out-of-state Day Student fee will be $600.  Please note that there is some space for parents to stay at the dorm as well, and we offer discounts to parents who apply and are accepted to be chaperones for our non-commuting high-schoolers in the dorm (usually 6-12 students total).

Upon acceptance into the program, High School Participants must pay a $75 non-refundable deposit to secure their space in the program, with the balance due at the beginning of Brass Week.  The exact due date of the deposit will be indicated in the acceptance letter.

If you wish to audit the week (observe but not participate), please contact us.
